i have been a fan of robert rauschenberg for many many years now and whenever i see his works i find them so intriguing. i like to figure out how artists make things and his works almost always stump me. i do know that he combines silkscreening with oil painting and he also does amazing assemblages. his work, to me, speaks of pop culture and controlled chaos. as if our worlds are spinning out of control and all we get are these glimpses of imagery. his works are so powerful and beautiful, he is so skilled...

i started this one a couple days ago, but didn't get to finally finish it until this afternoon. still working on combining the 'web' and shapes from previous paintings to see how they look together.

this is the view from my upstairs window. when i'm actually paying attention i'll make sure i look out this particular window at sunset, because it is the most perfect view of the sun, sky and their heavenly glory.
so, tonight, i am 'waiting'. waiting to go to dinner with friends, waiting for my brother and his family to arrive from australia, waiting for steve to come home, waiting for christmas eve, waiting for christmas...
this time of the year is so go-go-go, it's weird to just be waiting.

here's the woodblock i've been working on. i had some time to print some a/p's (artist proof) this afternoon. i think it looks pretty good, but i discovered that i need better ink. the ink i was using today was getting a little too thick and sticky, it was drying on the wood. so, i'm on the hunt for some proper ink today.

just started this lauan woodblock over the weekend. i finished carving the first color today, and i hope to print tomorrow morning. the image is from the amphitheatre outside the fine arts building at uno, i stare at it when i'm teaching watercolor. there is a wall that has this snakey form that is along the top and at the end of the wall there is this dragon head with a skull in it. i'm pretty excited to see how it turns out. there should be around five colors once the reduction block is finished.

for the past week, i have been slowly packing up bits and pieces from my parents house and bringing it here to my home. it has been fun rediscovering trinkets and memories. remembering times and places, some good and some bad. these adorable mugs were in a cubby in my old bedroom. i had completely forgotten about these and how my mom and i found them many years ago, i just had to have them back then...and here they were just waiting for me after all these years. i love the illustrations, the simplicity and playfulness. i'm not sure what years these are from but the bottom says "bunnykins" made in england, royal doulton.

i got to play around with some paint on saturday morning...it was so nice. i was curious about how these two designs of mine would work together. i like it, but i want to mess around with different colors and the layout of the information. i've got one more day at school and then i'm hoping to bust out some work over my holiday...
we'll see though. i've got friends and family coming in town very soon, maybe i could talk them into making some art with me?

so, it doesn't look too different than it did before, i know. but it needed something else to spice it up. the night i had painted this i knew i wanted to stitch it somehow. last night i went to town with the needle and thread and i think these subtlety really helped. when i'm looking at a work of art i love it when there is some detail or minor thing that pulls me in so close. i feel the thread did that for this painting...or least i hope.

last night was our official first 'bowling night'. we were celebrating greg pettersons birthday! usually in the winter months a group of friends get together and bowl it up. this is when the keno drawings emerge. it's hard to resist drawing when there are stacks of paper and crayons laying about all over. i, of course, am terrible at bowling-but- steve and kim are normally get the high points and turkey players. happy birthday, g.p.!

here is the famous kevin lynch in narbonne, france. my mom and i went to visit kevin and his wife a couple years ago when they were living in southern france. kevin helped me get on my feet when i first moved to san francisco way back in '98 and was a source of inspiration when i was young and naive. he frequently writes commercially and personally and here is one of his current pieces at the 'wave magazine' under the "green machine". kevin has written a book, still waiting to be published as well as many short stories. he also writes for 'ivillge' and he is well known throughout the family for his christmas/holiday letter. mad kudos to kevin!

i decided to redo the 'reality' themed print. the one i started with was something i would not normally do, so i started over and came up with this image. these shapes have been popping up all over my paintings and drawings, as you might recall. i worked on this woodcut last weekend at the hot shops open house and just printed the edition of 24 this weekend. these were made for the nebraska womens caucus for art, our exchange is next weekend.

somehow i seem to manage to create prints that would look great if they were all interlocked together. i wish i could sew these all into one big piece!

i had to get the visions and sounds from wednesday out of my head. this whole week has been awkward and confusing. at this point the news stations should be ashamed of themselves for dragging out the event and over saturating our consciousness with overbearing sadness. "all we need is love"
